Everything new is old again.
So, I have begun packing up my house in preparation for the whole sale/move thing. The problem I'm having is that I just didn't realize how much stuff I'd accumulated after living in the same place for five years. Back in school and for a few years after graduation I was moving every May, like clockwork. As anyone who's followed that schedule knows, moving time is a great time to just clean up and throw out any crap you don't need/want anymore. But when you're not moving once a year, stuff just kind of ends up getting pushed to the back of closets, thrown in the attic, piled in the garage, generally filling up space wherever it can fit. My house has become like the Blob, it just sucks up anything that gets near it. Except for the fact that it's immobile. But I digress. This is like my annual '95-'01 May moving cleanup, but just multiplied by 5 years of immobility. This is not going to end well.
So I guess having this much stuff makes me a pack rat? Well, if that's the case then I'm going to have to change since it's inevitable that whatever condo I can afford in the area I want simply will not hold the amount of stuff I already have without literally bursting open and spilling forth random clothes, DVDs, CDs, books and whatnot. Hell, I'll be lucky if couches and queen-sized beds don't start bursting out of the seams, too. Cross your fingers and hope I don't move in above you or you're in trouble. Trust me. I refuse to rent a storage unit just to fit some of this stuff, either. So away it's gotta go. I'm thinking I'll finally make good on that New Year's Mission to eBay a bunch of stuff. Lord knows, it'll be the first mission I actually keep. (Remember the 2-drink minimum one? As yesterday and well, every time I've gone out since January can attest to, that's a gigantic whoops...)
You know the other weird thing that happens when you live in the same place for too long? You lose entire years in your memory. Seriously. I tend to judge time frames by when I lived somewhere, what job I had, and how those two things related to whatever significant events happened at those times. I honestly couldn't tell you anything significant for me in 2002 or 2003. I remember Amy getting married in the summer and Mark getting married in fall '03, obviously, but I really couldn't tell you anything of significance in my life personally during those two years. Hell, I can't really tell you anything insignificant, either. Good thing I didn't have a blog back then or I'd be able to go back and read it now and go, "damn, I really wasn't doing much of anything back then, was I?" And then I'd get all bummed out that I'd wasted two years of my life not doing much except drinking and hanging out. (Hey, wait a minute...) Now that I think about it, I can tell you a couple events from then, but those belong in another post entirely. Trust me on this one. Now that I think about it, I can't even remember any CDs I loved in '03, and that's usually how I remember things like that. Strange... I guess alcohol really does kill brain cells. Who knew?
So yeah, moving. Anybody wanna loan me some cash so I can buy the condo before I sell the house? That'll make this whole process a lot easier, you know.

For a second there I thought this was going to become an ad for your garage sale you are going to have some saturday.
You are so right though, whenever I think of things that happened in college, I think of where I was living at the time to remember what year it happened.
Moving where? Are you leaving Jax?
Tom: Last week was the infomercial, this week is sales-pitch free. Promise! And that whole memory thing is the reason settling down sucks.
Expert: I'm getting a condo somewhere that isn't a 30 to 45 minute drive from the beach and closer to my friends. And doesn't have a yard I need to maintain. Still staying in Jax, though. I may be adding to the ex-girlfriend collection, but I'm not quite ready to abandon this town yet...
PK: Il Villagio may be a little out of my price range for what I'm looking for. And it's so... yellow. We'll see.
Who would want to leave their ex-collection behind anyways? I always feel more important when someone visits town and we go somewhere fancy and I say, "Oh, could you put your head down for a second? I used to date that guy over there and I don't want to make eye contact. He's still OBSESSED with me". Not that I ever got a chance to say that, but if I did, it would have been cool.
I've become a big proponent of giving at least one room in your house an enema once a year. Of course, it's easier when you're moving.
Like you said, it's just astounding how much shit a person can accumulate, and you tend to forget about things once they pile up.
I find it pretty liberating to get rid of clutter and jettison anything I haven't touched or looked at in a while. Why let that junk bog you down?
I don't know how you plan on moving the stuff once you have a place to move it to, but here's an option. Check out the prices of those POD things. If I recall correctly, they'll drop them off at your house and leave it there for a time. Then they'll move it to your new place and leave it there while you unpack it.
I'm kinda touched. Here I thought all that crap I fed you went in one ear and out the other, but this actually stuck:
"... it's inevitable that whatever condo I can afford in the area I want simply will not hold the amount of stuff I already have ..."
It really is true. And just because your new home may be smaller than the one you're in now, it's by no means settling or taking a step backwards. It also doesn't mean all of that stuff you've accumulated is junk. This is just a 'cleansing.' I don't make many promises (mostly because I hate to make ones I can't keep), but this much I can promise:
After all is said and done, you'll be happier. Happier to not have to make those long, late-night trips and happy to be over where the grass is truly greener (even if they water it too much). :)
(Can't wait for you to see our new place.)
Everybody is definitely moving these days! I will be there to help out, of course. I think I need to make some decisions real soon, though.
As for the MRI thing, I'm picking up the film in a little bit and I have an appointment with the orthopedic doctor in a couple weeks, though I'm trying to schedule it for sooner. All I know is it's some kind of bone marrow thing, but it really hasn't been explained to me yet. I'll post more once I know what the heck is up...
Hello..first time reader..was doing a google search on jacob maki i used to know back in the day from Mi and your site popped up..needless to say I didnt stop reading for a half hour .. thanks for keeping it interesting.. :) Really liked your valentine email.. I totally heard ya on that one :)
Melis: I'd offer my bed, but you know, with various family members likely to be in town, they might get the wrong idea. You know how this goes.
Face: No showS? I'm hurt. Deeply. You missed various shots that shouldn't have been drank by people looking to drive home. Seriously.
Shannon: Always nice to hear compliments from someone just dropping by. I have more funny stuff coming soon. I know I've said that before, but I'm being honest this time. Promise.
We weren't no-shows. We were last minute cancellations. And you weren't hurt, but thanks for pretending. :)
Besides, judging by the time stamp on your post, I predict the weather in Makiland today to be mild ass-dragging with a slight chance of hangover this morning.
Neither of which are good things for those of us who'll be doing manual labor today (or meeting with their boss later on their DAY OFF).
WTG: Looks like we're set in the help department, but thanks! Perhaps there will be Reisling involved once we're settled and can invite you guys over for the tour. We're in The Reserve at James Island.
My wife and I moved in early May, and we eBayed a buch of crap. I made like $300! In fact, I sold a Cappuccino machine that I never opened to a guy in Luxembourg for $45. The machine retailed for about $40, but this guy paid $30 for international shipping. I guess they don't sell quality Krupps Coffee Machines in Luxembourg.
